It was a wise William James who said,
"Need and struggle are what excite & inspire us."
King Bruce was inspired by the spider because he was a struggler. It was his need of freedom that excited and inspired him to fight till the end. We don't care about things we get at the snap of our hands. It is human nature to take for granted the things he gets very easily. Struggle is like a chilly which burns when in the mouth but it is definitely an intimate part of palatable food! A calm life on the couch with some popkorn to munch definitely sounds good; but only because we have lots of work to do. A Sunday is just another day of the week for a slipshod infant because he doesn't have any change in his schedule. But it is something sweet for an office goer who has slogged the previous week.
"One man's meat is another man's poison !"
A chapati or rice is something we make faces at when its being served because it is something we eat every day! And a burger or pizza is definitely more mouth watering. But it is something special for a child who feels he is lucky enough to get it even once a week. And there are millions of them who still die craving for one morsel of food! We, a little fortunate people find this a little hard to comprehend. It is only a struggler who realizes the value of little things.
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the man who was behind the creation of the Constitution Of India was born in a Dalit family. He was an avid reader. He was so engrossed in reading that he forgot the world around him. By the end of one month of school, most of us have our books in tatters. But, Dr. Ambedkar had all of his books in the same condition as they were when brought even after years! He liked books so much so that he would never ask money for himself or his accessories but wouldn't blink an eye to ask money for books. He would stay hungry or thrive on simple food so that he could buy books. He realized the importance of education because he had to struggle for it.
Talking of Dr. Ambedkar, I wouldn't miss the chance to talk about the freedom struggle in India. Hardly a handful of us youngsters today, realize the freedom we are lucky to get. For most of them, FREEDOM is just a 7 letter word! 15th of August or 26th January does instigate in us a feeling of patriotism. But sadly, it lies on the streets and in and around sewers the next day. Flags are thrown here and there the next day itself. We are lucky in the eyes of millions of others who are yet slaves in their own countries! But for us, freedom is a gift we enjoy from birth.
Struggle is a juggle which might take years to lead us to the path of success. It is this that has a long term effect on our minds. It is this that makes our first watch after a really tough exam a memorable one! It is this that makes our first salary a memorable one! We do not remember or value other watches or salaries of other months because it was probably not so callous. And hence, we esteem too lightly the things we get very easily.
I had been googling for ideas regarding this very topic for my SAT essay; having read a couple of ideas from other sites and essays, I found yours to be the most explicit and well corroborated... :)
